Allahabad Fort, Allahabad was built in the year 1583 by the great Emperor named Akbar. The Allahabad Fort was the largest fort built by Akbar. In the olden days this massive fort was considered among the best garrisons in the entire Mughal Empire.
Allahabad Fort in Allahabad in India has huge and massive walls and three gateways that are flanked by high towers. The glorious outer wall of the fort rises above the water’s edge. In the fort the most interesting and picturesque structure is the Ashoka Pillar that was earthed by the order of the great Mauryan King, Ashoka in 232 BC. The victories of Samudragupta have been praised in the inscriptions on the pillar. The pillar also contains decrees that were there since the times of Ashoka.

It is the largest fort built by Akbar. In its prime, the fort was unrivaled for its design, construction and craftsmanship. This huge fort has three galleries flanked by high towers.
At present is used by the army and only a limited area is open to visitors. The outer wall is intact and rises above the water’s edge. Inside the fort there is the Zenana, Palace of Mariam-uz-Zamani and the 3rd century BC Ashoka pillar [2] and Saraswati Koop as well, said to be the source of the Saraswati river. The Patalpuri temple is also here.
Allahabad Fort is the location of the much revered Akshaya Vat (Hindi: अक्षय वट, Urdu: اکشے وٹ) which mean immortal tree. Legends say that if anyone jumped from this centuries old banyan tree he would attain immortality. Civilians are not allowed to see this tree. It is near the southern wall and is one among the many trees seen from outside the southern wall of the fort.

At present the fort is used by the Army and only a limited area is open to visitors. Visitors are allowed to see the Ashoka Pillar and Saraswati Koop, a well, said to be source of the Saraswati river and Jodhabai Palace . The Patalpuri temple is also here. So is the much revered Akshaya Vat or immortal .
