Sangam in Allahabad http://www.tourismallahabad.org/2010/01/sangam-in-allahabad/ http://www.tourismallahabad.org/2010/01/sangam-in-allahabad/#comments Sat, 16 Jan 2010 12:09:17 +0000 admin http://www.tourismallahabad.org/?p=319 The sacred ‘Sangam‘ is the confluence of three of the holiest rivers in Hindu mythology Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical underground river of enlightenment, Saraswati. At the confluence, the muddy waters of the Ganges and the clear green water of the Yamuna can be distinctly seen to merge into one. Bathing at the Sangam is believed to be auspicious through out the year especially for 15 days in the month of Magh (mid-January to Mid-February) during ‘Magh Mela’ and longer during Maha Kumbh Mela held every 12 years. Astrologers calculate the holiest time to enter the water and draw up a ‘Holy Dip Schedule’. Maha Kumbh Mela attracts millions of devout Hindus and a holy dip then is believed to cleanse the soul. An enormous temporary township springs up on the vacant land on the Allahabad side of the river.

Kumbha / Maha Kumbha Mela(Allahabad ) http://www.tourismallahabad.org/2010/01/kumbha-maha-kumbha-melaallahabad/ http://www.tourismallahabad.org/2010/01/kumbha-maha-kumbha-melaallahabad/#comments Sat, 16 Jan 2010 11:12:06 +0000 admin http://www.tourismallahabad.org/?p=314 Kumbh Mela is a religious event that is organized on a grand scale in India. Kumbh Mela has a lot of significance for people in India, as it gives them an opportunity to liberate themselves from the sufferings and wash away all their sins. Kumbh Mela is believed to have the largest congregation of ascetics, yogis, sadhus, sages and common men living on the planet Earth. People from all across the country assemble here to observe this famous Mela, but very few are aware about its origin & history.
When the Kumbh or the pitcher full of amrit appeared, the demons played a mischief and they escaped the place with the nectar. The Gods also followed them and fought with demons in the sky for acquiring the pitcher of amrit. The battle went on for twelve consecutive days and nights, which was equivalent to 12 human years. It is said that during the war, a few drops of amrit fell on the earth at four distinctive spots, namely Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. These are those four points or locations, where Kumbh Mela festival is celebrated four times in every 12 years.

A huge temporary city is created for the millions of pilgrims that arrive for the most auspicious bathing days. Kumbha Mela is like a Yogi Convention, where yogis, sadhus (saints), holy people, and pilgrims come from all over India. Many sadhus come from various holy places, the most remote forests, and mountain caves in the Himalayas. The most famous are the Naga Babas, who are completely naked. They cover their bodies only with ash and wear their hair in dreadlocks.
